CRYING IN THE BATHROOM: A PROGRAMMATIC INTERVENTION
University of New Mexico | DESIGN STUDIO 2014
Crying puts people in a vulnerable state. They are unable to speak, unable to breath. Their eyes swell and turn red. The world around them becomes a blur of color that melts to grey.

This intervention serves as a space that is relaxing and tranquil in a time of great distress.
This semi-private area, created through different levels of transparency and sound, provides opportunities for interaction and contemplation.
A challenge was incorporating a new, semi-private healing place in an existing bathroom. Space was limited.
But there were 2 underutilized spaces
The existing fire escape that acts as the entrance to the crying space
The space above/below the existing sinks
water acts as a device to distort sound. It’s cleaned and reused throughout the space.
This threshold is inspired by the Rain Room, a 2012 experiential artwork by Hannes Koch and Florian Ortkrass. The user ascends the staircase, enters the private nook, and crosses through the water. On the other side is a safe, meditative space where one might find a helping hand.
