the oyster and the pearl
University of Oregon | DESIGN STUDIO 2016
This building represents the history of Portland’s Pearl District. In the 1970’s the railroad was in decline leaving the neighborhood in decay and creating a hollowing inner city. This led to low rents, so artists and start-ups started moving in. The term “pearl district” derived from this outcome. The old industrial shell concealed a new gleaming element of artistic energy and entrepreneurial spirit.
